It took me a long time to warm up to oatmeal raisin cookies. It’s the raisins, really. At worst you’re eating bland oatmeal and pockets of super high sugar spikes from the crystalized sugar in the raisins. Overall not a great experience, meh, at best.
Till you try these!
The title says it all The Best Oatmeal Dark Chocolate Chip Cookies and it’s truly earned.
You can expect:
- soft, chewy, warm oatmeal that’s been spiced with a little bit of cinnamon
- soft melty dark chocolate chips bringing bitter and sweet notes to the party
- toasted pecans for an added crunch
- going back for seconds, and thirds, and sevenths…
Indulgently Healthy….
Really, it is! Oatmeal itself is very heart healthy, lowering bad cholesterol, promotes weight loss, and lowers blood sugar. It’s a very nutrient dense food that’s wonderful for your body. Dark Chocolate, same deal. Instead of packed brown sugar, we used honey to further lower the impact on the glycemic index (lower the food’s ability to skyrocket your blood sugar and turn it into fat).
I.e: It’s January and I really wanted a cookie without feeling guilty.
Finally, pecans are added for texture and flavor, but they also bring a whole cadre of Vitamins to the mix!
So there! A healthy cookie! You’re welcome! (cue Dwayne Johnson)
Obviously it’s still a cookie, eat in moderation to maintain your nutrition plan! But it’s so good!
Added thoughts on flavor
I keep going back in my head on this cookie flavor profile, and I think it would really benefit from some lemon or orange zest! Here’s my thought process, it has oatmeal for texture and a creamy neutral flavor. Cinnamon works in the background, releasing only as you are chewing towards the back of your throat. Dark chocolate is bitter and sweet activating different taste buds on the tongue, and pecans add another layer of woodsy, creamy, flavors. But it needs something to lighten it up!
If you make this recipe, and add the citrus zest, let me know how it worked for you!! I’m dying to find out what you think! Leave a comment below!
Tools you might need
I like using these to keep an even size while scooping. Also, it’s easier to clean up than two spoons.
These babies resist about 450 degrees of heat from the oven. They are non stick, great for baking or chocolate work too. Also, in the long run, they are cheaper than parchment paper for baking. Save a tree guys.
