This smoothie does one thing well- get you through a meal. Given the low carbs and high content of healthy fats, it’s also perfect for keto diets. It’s a riff on a smoothie Robert used to drink while working all day and when he couldn’t eat much of anything else through the Chemo treatments.
Background note:
Robert is my future father in law, he got diagnosed with Stage 4 Lung Cancer back in April. When I first met him in February, he weighed around 190 pounds. Throughout the summer, with Chemo and complications with Cancer, he got down to 149. Losing 40 pounds in 12 weeks. The Oncologist told us that as Cancer grows, it feeds on your sugar, so you are basically consumed from the inside out- it also kills your appetite as it happened with him.
The hospital nutritionists recommended nutrient dense smoothies to offset that drastic caloric consumption. For lunch he would drink a smoothie with around 1800 calories to get the appropriate nutrients and go increase body weight. This helped him get more energy back to his daily life.
That smoothie was, and it’s still ingrained in my mind because I ordered it for him every day: Peanut Butter, Banana, Kale, Strawberries, Butter Pecan Ice Cream, Protein Powder and Weight Gainer. He ordered it so much the guys at Smoothie King called it “The Robert”!
You can expect:
- Feeling full throughout the day without any bloating.
- A better intestinal gut health due to the probiotics in the Greek Yogurt
- Antioxidants from the raspberry
- Healthy fats from the avocado add a creamy texture to it.
I put a little bit of everything when I was developing this recipe, It works for Keto and weight loss diets because all of the carbs and sugars are replaced with healthy fats for energy:
- Peanut Butter
- Greek Yogurt
- Avocado
The sweetening components, raspberry, honey, and bananas are all low on the glycemic index: they won’t cause your blood sugar to spike so you can keep burning fats as a main source of energy. Adding protein powder certainly helps, as this is also a great workout shake for faster recovery.
Which goes great in line with our New Year’s Resolutions!
Happy Hump Day!

The honey in this beverage will knock anyone right out of keto
What are your suggestions? How would you make it more Keto friendly?
Hi,
I am pretty sure the banana and honey make this not keto. 1 banana has 7.7 carbs. Keto is a high fat low carb diet. And why wouldn’t you use stevia instead of honey to make it even more keto friendly. The yogurt could also be replaced with cottage cheese to drop the carb count even lower. Not sure how that would taste but I am going to try your recipe but with my tweaks. I’ll let you know, but I appreciate the post and look forward to more Keto recipes if tou have them. Take care
Hi Tina! Thanks for the feedback! You’re right that stevia could lower the Carb count further, I was looking at the recipe from a daily net carb keto approach since I’m used to having more protein smoothies and tilapia meals throughout the day, so this would be the biggest incorporation of carbs. I’ll add your suggestions to the recipe! More readers will benefit from it too. Let me know how it is with cottage cheese and the other tweaks!
